The tendency with church logos and Christian logos in general is, understandably, to use standard Christian images. The cross, the open Bible, the white dove. These are unmistakable Christian symbols, but because they feature in so many church logos it does create a problem from a pure design/marketing point of view. Of course, you still want one or more of those symbols in your logo - and that's fine - but to make sure that your church logo is unique to your church it is wise to combine these standard Christian symbols with something that is specific to your church.
One strategy that works well is to combine the symbol(s) with something that identifies your geographical location - for example a specific city skyline or a specific mountain in the background. You could also identify a keyword that sets your church apart and use that as a concept in your church logo design. For example, if your church is characterized by a strong focus on the youth, that could set the tone for a unique church logo even where standard Christian images are used.
